Overview of Role

 

Individual will be a member of a System & Applications Support Engineer team that provides 24/7 support of global back-office, production, trading & broking service infrastructure. The individual will troubleshoot application and system problems, install and configure IBM Servers (x336, x3550, x3650, x3950 family) & HP Integrity servers (C-Class blade systems) at the Data Centers in a Unix environment, and globally work with Field Services personnel. This position involves shift work at location in Parsippany NJ and occasionally Edison, NJ. This role requires a great deal of dedication to meeting planned timelines and analytical skills to swiftly resolve issues.

 

Working Hours:

Working hours are 8am – 8pm on Friday/Saturday/Sunday one week and Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday the next week (repeating week over week). Candidate must be flexible to work different shifts if additional coverage is needed.

 

Principal Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Provide reliable and quality support 24X7 in a production environment.

  • Respond to events from the monitoring tools, with the goal of restoration of service.

  • Carry out deployments for new servers and replacement or failed components.

  • Carry out system health checks periodically and following deployments and upgrades.

  • Analyze application logs to determine root cause of problems.

  • Perform trace analysis using TCPdump, Snoop and Ethereal.

  • Plan and document Change Requests, as required to implement Application and Server upgrades and changes.

  • Work with hardware and software vendors to obtain support to diagnose problems.

  • Guide field staff with deployment and replacement of servers and server components remotely

  • Participate in meetings with other groups (Engineering, Development, and QA) to plan and document deployment approaches and Operational Requirements.

 

Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of Linux experience

  • 2+ years’ experience working on trading system environments is a plus

  • In depth knowledge of RHEL 5 and RHEL 6 including clustering. Certifications preferred.

  • 4+ years’ experience with installation, configuration and troubleshooting of Servers, Cisco Network devices and trading system applications within a Datacenter environment.

  • Experience in hardware and software support, configuration and installation of Servers, Cisco network switches and routers. Server Hardware, Operating system installation, and network TCP/IP experience.

  • Knowledge and experience with installation, configuration of PCs, small servers (IBM x336, x3550, x3650 & x3950). Ability to work with Cisco routers and switches desirable.

  • Strong understanding of LAN/WAN, TCP/IP and DNS

  • Familiarity with ESX VMware virtualization is a plus

  • Experience with MS Windows Server desirable.

  • Experience with HP OpenVMS desirable.

  • Individual must be a self-starter, highly dependable and detail-oriented.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely in a logical, organized fashion, verbally and in writing with co-workers, superiors, and corporate users.

  • Possess good troubleshooting skills for diagnosing hardware/software issues

  • Ability to review and diagnose problems through analysis of system and application logs.

  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently to perform duties as assigned.

  • Ability to analyze and correct equipment malfunctions and performs replacement of components, subsystems as appropriate.

  • Learn to developed applications in order to provide support.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills and logic.

  • Must be able to:

    • Follow routine checklist of tasks per shift (Many tasks to complete   daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annually).

    • Review log files, encapsulate (tar, gzip and transport (ftp)

    • Provide status updates to management and turnover reporting to other shifts & departments.

    • Write incidents reports & keep a timeline of events during outage periods.

    • Follow procedures; provide updates; ask questions; take action; follow up on missing; incomplete or unresolved issues.

 

  • Must be:

    • Organized with the ability to multitask.

    • Flexible to change of task.

    • Punctual when reporting for shifts; above average attendance is critical.

    • Able to work/cover other shifts during holidays; staffing shortages; emergency cases.

    • Flexible to long working hours.

  • Equivalent to completion of four years of college-level coursework in computer science, information technology or a related field.

  • Reasonably flexible with schedule including working nights, weekends and holidays.
